I run a youth hockey league up here in Edmonton, AB and after the season was over and summer returned, I got on the '78 OldWing and went west through Jasper, AB and down to Vancouver, BC, hung with family there and then over to Vancouver Island to visit friends. Then I went south through Washington, and Oregon and east across the mountains and back north to Alberta through Idaho and Montana. I alternated camping and staying in motels. Great trip. Met a lot of nice folks on both sides of the border. Only ran into jerks in little offices at the border. Before 9/11 crossing the border was a breeze and border officials just waved you through. I just bought a beautiful 1998 BMW R1200C (the James Bond bike) from a dealer in California which is now on a truck heading for Great Falls, MT. I'll fire up my old Toyota pickup in a couple of weeks and run down there and haul it home. Don't know if I will have room for both bikes, so I may have to either sell the OldWing or part it out for fun and profit, but somehow I can't bear the thought of undoing all my hard work restoring the old girl. The original owner crashed it and it sat in a garage for 15 years or so before I took it home and spent a couple of years finding parts. I even have a Vetter/Cycle Sound stereo pod with an original 1978 AM/FM radio in it. It only has about46.000 miles on it - just nicely broken in. It's a great bike for long trips, if you don't mind the worrying about how to find parts if anything goes wrong on the road. If I can, I would like to keep it for special events, like toy runs.Right now I wish I was in Florida and not looking at snow on the ground out the window over my monitor.
